The sales of tablet will outdo the desktop PC this year, according to a new report by International Data Corporation (IDC), a research firm .

IDC forecasted that the tablet will see a growth of 48.7 percent while the shipment of desktops will drop by 4.3 percent.

"Worldwide desktop PC shipments are expected to drop by 4.3 percent and portable PCs to maintain a flat growth of 0.9 percent. The tablet market, on the other hand, is expected to reach a new high of 190 million shipment units with year-on-year growth of 48.7 percent," said IDC.

The report also said that the smartphone market is expected to see a growth of 27.2% to 918.5 million units. Considering the current market scenario IDC also noted that the tablet and smartphones have huge potential to grow.

IDC said sales of desktop and portable personal computers fell 4.1 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively, for the year, while smartphones were up 46 percent.

Looking ahead, IDC forecast tablet shipments will surpass desktop PCs in 2013 and portable PCs in 2014. It predicted tablet sales would grow another 48.7 percent this year to 190 million units.

The smartphone market is expected to grow 27.2 percent to 918.5 million units, IDC said, and sales of traditional PCs will struggle again, especially in emerging economies.

Microsoft has reportedly sold about 400,000 Surface Pro units in the five weeks this Windows 8 tablet has been on the market.This device debuted exclusively in the U.S. and Canada on Feb. 9. Microsoft's inability to keep up with demand for this tablet immediately after its launch can't have helped its sales figure.

More recently, the company has caught up with demand. This tablet is therefore scheduled to go on sale in a number of other countries later in the coming months. The sales figure comes from Bloomberg, who cites unnamed sources. Microsoft itself has never announced how many Surface units it has sold.

The Windows 8 Factor

The Surface Pro runs Windows 8 Pro, a new version of Microsoft's signature operating system designed specifically for touchscreen-based devices. This is taking a while to catch on.

Consumers are resisting the change to a new user interface, while companies are always conservative about switching to new versions of Windows. This is surely slowing demand for Microsoft's tablet.

Bloomberg's source also indicated that the Windows RT(android 4.0 tablet) version of this computer, the Surface RT, isn't enjoying strong sales. Since this tablet launched in the fall, Microsoft has sold about 1 million units.

This version is less expensive than the Surface Pro because it uses an ARM processor not an x86 one. On the other hand, it can't run software designed for previous versions of Windows.
